In a Saudi Starbucks, a Saudi international business women got a little more than she asked for with her latte. She had decided on the regular "western" practice of meeting at a Starbucks to discuss a business deal, with a member of a separate branch of her company. She was spotted and reported to the Muttawa, "Saudi religious police", they arrested her and the Syrian financial analyst she was meeting with. They accused her of a pseudo-sexual disposition to commit sin.
The religious police strip-searched and forced her to sign a confession to having been caught alone with a unrelated man.
She said"I had no other choice" but to sign, said the married mother of three. "I was scared for my life ... I was afraid that they would abuse me or do something to me."
The man with whom Yara had coffee, an unnamed Syrian financial analyst, was also arrested and remains in custody.
